Curt Whiticar, The Son, The Father, The Friend, The Captain…A legacy of life that will remain in our hearts forever!

G. Curtis “Curt” Whiticar, founder of Whiticar Boat Works, first came to the Stuart, Florida area in 1917 with his parents and two brothers. Addison Whiticar, Curt's father, would hand-line commercial fish during the winter months and make a decent living due to the abundance of fish at that time. Summers were spent fishing in Fortecues, New Jersey. Due to competition from commercial net fishing in the late twenties, Addison started to use his boat more frequently for sport fishing.
Initially splitting time between his native New Jersey and Stuart, Whiticar worked with his father in the fishing industry as a kid, coming to Florida in the winter for the warmer temperatures and bountiful catch. 
He eventually settled down on the Treasure Coast, raising his three children with his late wife, Elsa, in Stuart.
Curt built his first boat when he was 14, and by the age of 23, he had designed and built a 33-foot single screw boat called the “Shearwater.” This fishing boat, based on local inlet problems and demanding fishing needs, is the backbone to the design of the modern Whiticar sport fisherman of today. Addison - more fondly known as Capt. Add - had Curt build him a boat shortly afterward in 1938. “The “Gannet,” a twin screw 38-footer was Capt. Add's pride and joy.
"He was a remarkable man, and a living library full of history of Martin County," said Rick Crary, himself a member of a longtime local family and historian. "I had dinner with him a few years ago, and the story that impressed me most was when he told us about the day Gov. John Martin came to Stuart to celebrate the creation of the new county bearing his name. Curt pointed out the spot where Martin gave his speech in 1926, a few months after the county was formed in 1925. Curt remembered because he was there, a teenager of about 14."
By the late 1930s, had begun to make a name for the family with his craftsmanship. By the 1950s, his boats were in demand by anglers who wished for good sea boats built to handle the sometime choppy Treasure Coast waters offshore. They were known to have a sharp entry bow and steep deadrise, which made them perfect for slicing into a 4-to-5 foot high wave. More than 60 Whiticar boats have been built since Whiticar assembled his first.
Due to ever increasing demand for these boats, Curt moved the Mess Hall from Camp Murphy, at what is now Jonathan Dickinson State Park, and reassembled the wood on a slab at its present location in 1947. The first boat built at the new facility in 1954 was the 38 ft “Hobo” – made for Curt's brother, Jack. Powered by a pair of 225 horse power Chrysler engines, it proved to be fast and exceptionally seaworthy
Before founding Whiticar Boat Works in 1947, Whiticar ran a charter fishing business that came to include seven boats called the Whiticar Fleet. Considered among the early conservationists in the area, he devised a plan to present anglers who were coming to the “Sailfish Capital of the World” with a special golden pin if they released the billfish back into local waters. This would allow tourism to the area to continue without putting the fish's population in danger. The mission was taken up by the newly formed Stuart Sailfish Club, which included local fishing charters like Whiticar's, in 1941.

The 70’ by 90’ building became the foundation from which Whiticar Boat Works evolved. In 1949 Curt hired his brother-in-law, John Dragseth, to help him run the company. The company’s success came as a result of quality repairs and the famous line of custom fishing boats. John Dragseth and Curt Whiticar relied on a trained staff and attention to customer needs for Whiticar Boat Works to become a known destination for the East Coast recreational boater.
Much the same way that a father teaches his son to fish, it was fitting that both John Dragseth and Curt Whiticar had sons join the company and continue the family tradition of excellence in marine service and repair. Sons Jim Dragseth and John Whiticar were at the helm as the recreational boating life style continued to grow and become more demanding.  To maintain the ability to meet the needs of the boating community Whiticar Boat Works established new divisions of the company, including:  Shearwater Marine in 1996; Whiticar Marine North in 2003; Whiticar Yacht Sales in 2004; and Whiticar Custom Boats in 2000.
Whiticar retired from the boat building business in 1986 when he was 75. But he continued to play golf three times a week at Martin County Golf and Country Club well into his mid-90s. He may have played longer except a friend accidentally hit him in the knee with a golf cart and he was unable to play without pain after that.
Whiticar dedicated also more time to painting, a favorite pastime. He gave some of his works to family, friends and even the Historical Society and Stuart Heritage Museum. At the age of 96, he wrote a book about what life was like in Stuart in the early 1900s. 
Whiticar celebrated his 106th birthday on Feb. 13, shortly after which he was presented with a Legendary Captains & Crew award by the International Game Fish Association. 
"Everyone uses the word 'amazing' and 'great' and 'accomplished,' and I think probably the one word that probably says it all is 'accomplished,'" John Whiticar said, recalling how people often referred to his father. "He's an accomplished fisherman, boat-builder; he was an accomplished golfer—he wasn’t the best golfer, but he was dedicated… just an all-around great person." 
Curt Whiticar is survived by his children, Laura Kay Darvill-Whiticar, Joanne Talley and John Whiticar; John's wife, Dot Whiticar; eight grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
There will be a celebration of Whiticar's life April 9 at Indian RiverSide Park in Jensen Beach at a time yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family asks to make contributions in his name to the Stuart Sailfish Club, the Stuart Heritage Museum, or Treasure Coast Hospice.

Is Pod Propulsion the future for boats?

At the 2005 Miami Boat Show Volvo Penta introduced its Inboard Performance System (IPS) and changed forever not only the way we run our boats but the way we think about running them.
Before, guiding required planning, logic, coordination, and strategizing; after, it became simple intuition: Look where you want to go and point the direction control that way. They said it was so easy a child could do it, and sure enough, it wasn’t long before a man just out of kindergarten skillfully manipulated a 40-footer into a slip all by himself.


IPS also claimed more speed and better fuel efficiency (the precise amount of each is still up for discussion), and thanks to its behind engine placement, more interior space, and lower interior sound levels. Still, many boaters weren’t convinced. One described his skepticism stating the following: “It’s just too good to be true...!- There’s must be a hidden cost that no one has factored in.”

The Unidentified


Over the years, I’ve found online forums to be some of the most common places for first-hand accounts of engine-related problems. Certain, the stories are one-sided, but as an total source of information, can be concluded that pods are no more disposed to letdown than inboards but that when a pod breaks, the repair bill’s going to be higher.

Everyone fears the unknown, especially boaters, many of whom still consider pod drives something strange. Hang around a boatyard, and you’ll hear at least one horror story about some unfortunate soul who was stuck, because his pods failed. These are often second- or third-told tales with a questionable attribution and few verifiable facts.

Pods are comprised of some very costly components, but theoretically, their modular design should yield some countervailing savings in labor costs. 

Difficulty


Conventional wisdom seems no longer applies. Today electronics are intimately entwined with every aspect of our lives, and whether it’s commercial jet engines, cars, home appliances, or chart plotters, we expect and receive virtually bulletproof reliability.

So, the fact that pod systems are full with electronics actually makes them less likely to failure—and unfortunately a deep mystery to most mechanics. Unhappily, the fact that electronics don’t respond well to basic force may mean some service challenges, at least in the short term, which is why long-distance cruisers have, as a group, been cautious of pods.

Pods have more parts, both mechanical and electronic, and conventional wisdom says that means more problems. The inboard has simplicity and ubiquity. Pull into any port in the world, and there’s probably a guy there who can fix it. 

Upkeep


To keep Inboards, require sacrificial-anode replacement, prop adjustment, cutless bearing repair, shaft alignment, and a method of controlling marine growth. Pods require drive-oil changes every 250 hours or annually. Also, demanding periodic attention are hydraulic steering, transmission, and lower-unit oils. Everything told, figure $500 per engine annually, plus haul-out fees.

Most pods also require periodic removal and inspection of prop sets and seals, and re-greasing of the prop-shafts - figure $250 per pod.

All up, pod owners can expect to pony up something like an additional $2,500 for scheduled maintenance. That’s not mark change! and while it’s hard to nail down the amount of that fuel-efficiency edge, everyone agrees it does exist and can compensate you for at least some of the additional maintenance costs. Either if you’re a do-it-yourself, you’ll discover that a lot of pod maintenance requires specialized tools and training. 

Inertia


Like long-distance cruisers, sport fisher-men have been slow to accept pods, in this case not because of supposed deficiencies but rather an unwillingness to try anything that might reduce chances of success. Better fuel efficiency? More interior room? If they don’t increase the odds of hooking up, who cares? And maneuverability—well, any good sport-fishing captain can put his ride wherever he wants—without a control.

Initial Fee


The true of all is that Pods cost more, But how do you compare boats? Imagine a 44-footer with three cabins, two heads, and inboards priced $20,000 less than an identical 44-footer with pods that, thanks to its aft-engine placement, has one more cabin or head. Wouldn’t accommodations be the more relevant measure? And what of resale? How much of the additional initial cost will you get back at trade-in time? We’re still trying to sort through the answer to that one.

There are many reasons why everyone’s not on the pod movement. But tick them off and it’s hard not to conclude that the trend is undeniable: More boaters prefer them every year, and while they’ll never completely replace inboards, they are the future of boating. As one broker comments, “It’s like automatic transmissions. At first no one trusted them; now you can hardly sell a car without one.”

Boating Lifestyle at Fort Pierce


Thinking about fishing and boating at Fort Pierce? There are many reasons why Fort Pierce, located on the central east coast of Florida, is considered to be one of the best fishing and boater friendly spots in the country.

Aspects to consider before boating

  • Review the chart or map of the area you will be visiting

  • All children should wear a life vest and the captain should wear one if boating alone.

Thinking about Stabilizers?


Tossed around on your boat it’s not a big problem anymore. Nowadays there are more ways than ever to keep your boat from rocking.

Marine stabilization systems are a big business, and many manufacturers set the competence on to keep your boat stable and able. However, with a large number of options, all demonstrating different advantages, choosing the right one for your boat/yacht can be difficult.


To help you simplify the decision on how to select the best stabilizer option for your yacht, we’ve grouped stabilizers on two main types for a simple comparative analysis:


  • Greatly reduces the rocking motion of the boat and it comes in applications from 30′ to over 100′.
  •  Gyros supplies much greater stabilization per pound than inert counterweight. 
  •  Gyros are always located inside the hull where there is no risk of damage.
  •  Comes in many different sizes and will work in multiple configurations depending on a yacht’s layout.

Things to consider about Gyro Stabilizers:

  •   Pan and tilt speed is limited.
  •   Due to size, it could take a considerable amount space in the yacht.

Benefits of Fin Stabilizers:

  • They take up minimal interior yacht space.
  • They don’t need warm up time, they can be turned on and start working immediately.
  • They don’t run out of energy, but once the rams involved have reached the full extent of their travel, they can’t extract any more energy until the boat starts to roll in the other direction. 

Things to consider about Fin Stabilizers:

  •  Fins are submerged and this makes them a lot more difficult to repair, which generally means an increase repair costs.



Which stabilizer suits you?

  • High speed sports yachts: Gyro systems are good because they don’t require mounting external fins and usually need only electrical power and room to mount.
  • Trawler type boats: These will most likely suit active fin stabilizers as their first line of stabilization technology. 
  •  Boats at anchor: Zero–speed stabilization could fit perfectly this kind of boat, because this system uses the paravane rigging to deploy a special piece of gear that will sink easily and without resistance. A gyro system, which can also be used at speed; might be adequate enough for smaller boats in quieter anchorages.

Advances mean that stabilizers are improving at all the time. With a little more exploration, you can find the perfect system for your boat that will keep her steady, ready, and raring to go. HAULING OUT CATAMARANS IN SOUTH FLORIDA

After spending almost a quarter century under sail, cruising catamarans are my favorite boats. As a professional captain, I have crossed oceans and seas on monohulls, catamarans and trimarans of all sizes, but it is always aboard a cat I am most happy to be at the helm. 

With the ownership of a cruising catamaran comes the responsibility of maintenance, and that responsibility includes annual haul outs. Finding a boatyard or marina with the capability to lift a wide beam vessel can be a daunting task. My unscientific survey of sailing catamarans 40- to 45-foot LOA revealed the average beam is 23 feet, with a loaded displacement of 17 tons. From 45- to 49-foot LOA, the numbers average 25 feet and 18 tons. And 50- to 54-foot LOA are 26 and a half feet and 25 tons in weight. You get the picture. Hauling out a sailing cat is not about weight; it's all about beam. 




Fortuitously, from Fort Pierce to Key West there is quite a election of full service locations to haul out a cat of at least a 23-foot beam for repair and maintenance. Owners of increasingly popular power catamarans, or sailing cats'with air drafts less than 54 feet, can take advantage of the boat yards tucked away behind low bridges.

Harbortown Marina in Ft. Pierce is located along the ICW just north of downtown. For sailing catamarans with masts taller than the ICW fixed bridged clearance of 65 feet, Harbor­town Marina has direct access to the Atlantic Ocean through Ft. Pierce Inlet, less than three miles away. Their 150-ton Trav­elift will haul out cats with a maximum beam of 26 feet. 772- 466-7300 harbortownmarina-fortpierce.com

Head south along the ICW to Manatee Pocket at Stuart to find the South Florida boat yard for Hinckley Yacht Services. It has easy access from the ocean via St. Lucie Inlet; just watch out for the strong currents and shifting sandbars at the junction of the inlet and the ICW. Although Hinckley's heritage embraces building fine monohull cruising sailboats, the Hinckley brand has grown in the past 20 years to include jet drive picnic boats and runabouts with classic lines and superior craftsmanship. Cruise west from Manatee Pocket along the Okeechobee Waterway to American Custom Yachts. This boatyard is located at marker Red "46" just east of the St. Lucie Lock, and sits between two fixed bridges. There are several fixed bridg­es on the way from Manatee Pocket, with the lowest_ vertical clearance being 54 feet. If your mast is short enough to clear that Palm City Bridge, American Custom Yachts can use their 150-ton Travelift to put the straps around catamarans of up to 27-foot beam. 772-286-2835; americancustomyachts.com

The north end of the Gold Coast is the home of Rybovich. Their marine centers in West Palm Beach and Riviera Beach are located just south and north of Peanut Island along the ICW. Entering the ICW from Lake Worth Inlet avoids any bridge clearance problems. The newer Rybovich yard at Riviera Beach (561-863-4126) will accommodate cats up to a 26-foot beam on their 150-ton Travelift. The original West Palm Beach yard (561-844-1800) has a massive 660-ton Travelift, capable of handling cats up to 35-foot beam.

Heading up the New River past downtown Fort Lauderdale offers a variety of haul out possibilities. Before heading up river, however, one must remember the bascule drawbridges are locked down during morning and afternoon rush hours from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and 4:30 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Once through the William H. Marshall Memorial Bridge, just beyond the bend on the river that is home to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, continue on and choose the South Fork of the New River. 

Just before reaching the I-95 fixed bridge, note the Lauderdale Marine Center on the south bank. Lauderdale Marine Center is a combination full service and do-it-yourself boat yard encompassing 50 acres of land. It is a popular superyacht repair facility and its 300-ton Travelift can haul out catamarans up to 30-foot beam. 954-713-0333; lauderdalemarinecenter.com

To go upriver beyond the I-95 bridge, sailing catamarans must first negotiate the vertical clearance of 55 feet for that bridge. If your mast fits under that bridge, access to the boat yards along Marina Mile (State Road 84) is open.

Billfish Marina is the first haul out facility on State Road 84, and also has the smallest Travelift with catamaran capabilities. At 70 ton, it will lift a maximum of 23.5-foot beam, which is more than adequate for a 40-foot LOA cat. 954-587-6226; billfishmarina.com

Continuing west find Roscioli Yachting Center, a shipyard that has been in existence for 40 years and was completely renovated in 2008. It now has a 352-ton mobile lift capable of hauling out a catamaran with a maximum beam of 28 feet. 954-581-9200; rycshipyard.com
